Kalaiya is the
headquarter of
Bara district (one of 75 districts of
Nepal) which is situated 270km (approximately) south of Kathmandu. The
area in overall falls within the plain belt of Nepal bordering India.
The town itself although a district headquarter has nothing much to offer
except agriculture based work. Majority of people living in this area
are Indian alike who speak little Nepali but mostly Indian language or
their own dialect.
3 kms away from this small town lies a village called
"Teng Rahal".
"Teng Rahal" is the small village in which we are interested. The village
occupies a total area of 16,848 sq ft within which there are a total of
27 huts/houses. Out of these 27 huts only 3 of them are worth living.
The 24 houses occupy less than 35sq ft of area each in which more than
5 people (in average) are currently living.
The nice looking houses have been built with assistance from New SADLE and its main donor "Sisters of Oirschot, The Netherlands.
These 24 houses/huts are made out of clay and wheat straw and has a door much lower than 4' in height and 2 ft. wide. One would really have difficulties in getting into house and coming out. There is no cooking area inside the house as such they are cooking is done in the open sky.
The land initially belonged to the private person in the past. Thanks to an Indian priest who bought the land for these people. If it was not for the Saint to buy the piece of land, these people would have been not there where they are at the moment.

There is a small area for walking and playing for the children in front of every house. The houses are lined in two rows with an open space in the front. They have regrettably no access to safe drinking water or sanitation facilities (including toilet or a place to take bath).
In this small village, live a total of 101 people including 42 children.
Out of these 42 children only 3 of them have been admitted to school.
These 3 children again are the ones who get support from
New SADLE.
When we visited the village we saw not even a single man in the vicinity
which was a matter of fact known to me earlier but very strange for many.
When asked to women, the only answer was "My husband is gone to beg in
Kathmandu". This was so heartening to hear that so many of people lived
under the income of begging. Begging itself is a social crime and we feel
we including the government of Nepal are equally responsible for this
social evil.
New SADLE now has done following social works through
its
