We have many stories to share
about the background of our beneficiaries. For instance we have a lady
known as “Tiger Lady”, the real name however, is
Kalimaya.
Tiger Lady when diagnosed as leprosy was kicked out of home and taken
to a jungle by her own husband and sons with a sack of rice only to live
for ever. In her search for a shelter she roamed around jungle and finally
found a “den” as her new home. As the darkness grew a tiger
with 2 cubs approached the den and upon seeing a stranger occupying their
den left the area quietly. Days and months passed for Kalimaya living
in the den. The tiger visited the lady in a regular basis and eventually
they were becoming friends.
Eventually the villagers knew about her presence and she was referred
to Sewa Kendra (a medical and elderly home unit) where she was treated
and now enjoys a life as a cook.
The interesting part is that after several years in Sewa Kendra she is
occasionally visited by her family members but Kalimaya is determined
to remain in Sewa Kendra.
Kul Bahadur Adhikari, a weaver with us
ever since our project started, was kicked out of family 34 years before.
To everyone’s surprise he has now regular contacts with family members.
This was all possible as a result of rehabilitation work of New SADLE.
While
Lok Bahadur Chhetri, a polio case
now working as a tailor has a completely different story. Lok Bahadur
was kicked out of his family when he was only a young boy. He walked for
days and months before he eventually reached Kathmandu. He finally found
us after begging in the streets for more than 15 years. He is a happily
married to Rosha, also a polio case. They have 2 daughters. Whenever Lok
Bahadur comes across a beggar, never forgets to suggest; “why don’t
you stop begging and start working like me?”
